Welcome to Tysvær Municipality!

This is an abbreviated English version of our portal which will show you some of the municipality's services.

Tysvær Municipality is in the very heart of Haugalandet. The administrative centre for it`s 9 513 inhabitants is at Aksdal, 13 km. east of Haugesund. The main road from Haugesund, over the Haukelifjell mountains and on to Oslo (E134) crosses the coastal road between Stavanger ande Bergen (E39) at Aksdal.

Tysvær Municipality is known for it`s many fjords which cut into the 220 km. long coastline. Here we can find many idyllic pearls and a varied landscape, heather covered moors, hills, mountains, deep fjords, sheltered bays and an attractive countryside. the poor soils on the outskirts of Tysvær are one of the reasons for the large number of emigrants who sailed to America during the last century. They were helped over by Cleng Peerson, Tysvær`s "Father of of Emmigration".

The same landscape inspired and trollbound one of Norway`s greatest master artists, Lars Hertervig. He was born on the island of Borgøy, the only island in Tysvær which is still inhabited.
